Easyjet are now flying to Sofia - check out their really cheap fares from £50 return. 

Direct flights from the UK to Sofia can also be obtained from British Airways or Bulgaria Air

Costs of flights vary between £160 and £230 depending on the time and season. 

I can highly recommend a company called Kelkoo as they have a very good and easy search engine for flights. 

Thomson are now flying direct to the coastal resorts in the summer season.

I was able to get a flight last year to Bourgas Airport on the southern coast for just £75 in May.  I then caught a bus to Veliko Tarnovo for just £4.  It was a great way to see the countryside!

Car Hire 

Car hire is available at Sofia airport with various companies.   I can recommend  Rentacar in Bulgaria  whom I have used in the past with no worries. 

Taxis

If you are not hiring a car, taxis are a reasonably cheap way to transfer to your destination.

Arranged transfer

If you are buying property, and have chosen your estate agent, the agent can arrange a transfer for you if you prefer.  Transfers from Sofia Airport to Veliko Tarnovo for instance will cost around £50.  From Sofia to Bansko it will probably be about the same.

You need to allow about three hours from Sofia to Veliko or Bansko.
