Veliko
Tarnovo is one of the most picturesque towns in Bulgaria.
The Yantra River winds in a horseshoe bend through a gorge, and the hills either side are covered with traditional stone buildings with red tiled roofs. The old part of Veliko Turnovo has cobbled streets that snake down to the river. High upon the hill, the Tsaravets Fortress is as imposing as ever. VT also has a university and there is quite a 'cosmopolitan' feel about the place, with lots of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes - many with fantastic views of the surounding hills and down to the river. I bought an old traditional stone house, over 100 years old, in a village called Pushevo - just 25 km outside of VT.
There are many villages surrounding VT so if you are looking for property, leave lots of time to explore the surroundings. A lovely place to go is Arbanassi, a five minute taxi ride from VT. Again, there are many restaurants and hotels with beautiful views looking back to Veliko Tarnovo. If you need a place to stay - check out www.velikoturnovo.info , the tourist information centre in VT.
